Also called the Japanese temple tree, ginkgo, or temple tree, it is a tree from the Ginkgoaceae family. The ginkgo biloba tree is one of the oldest tree species on earth and is estimated to be over 200 million years old.
Although ginkgo biloba is called the Japanese temple tree, it is native to the Zhejiang province of China. To this day, the tree still grows wild in this region. Centuries ago, the tree was imported to Japan, where it was cultivated near temples. This is also how the ginkgo tree earned its nickname, "Japanese temple tree."
